Thankful For...

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 Thessalonians 5:18

I had planned to write a whole post about all that God has taught me about thankfulness this past year as we entered this season where we focus especially on thanksgiving, but in all of the busyness I ran out of time. I just wanted to share quickly that while our circumstances may not be ideal or things may not be easy or comfortable still for us in many ways, we have learned first hand what it means to be thankful in it ALL and for the many things that God has done in our life. In particular, we have seen God's provision through the hands of His people. We have been blessed in countless ways this past year (even in the midst of trials) and my heart is overflowing with gratitude. Maybe I will have a chance to write more on this when we are back in town, but we are headed out in a matter of minutes to visit family for Thanksgiving.

But I did want to share one thing that we are so very thankful for this Thanksgiving...
(The iron-on shirt that we made to announce baby #2 to our families that held up just long enough to get the job done. We learned that you can't find Big Brother shirts anywhere with all the holiday stuff out in stores!)
We are expecting baby # 2 in June!! I am 11 weeks pregnant and will post more about this pregnancy later, but I am overwhelmed with thankfulness that God would allow me to mother another precious child. James is beyond ecstatic to be a big brother and already loves "his baby in Mama's tummy!"

Fall Family Pictures

We recently had our neighbor take some pictures of our family at our favorite park. It had been over a year since we had any pictures taken of our entire family (although there is no shortage of the pictures that I constantly take!), but I just wanted to capture a few of our family at this stage (and before I have a three year old in February!). Life changes so quickly and James has grown so much since our last little photo shoot (see the picture at the top of the blog!). I wanted to go ahead and share a few of the pictures on the blog but I'm saving my "favorite favorite" pictures until after Christmas when we'll give out pictures to our families. :)

I am really happy with how they turned out. James is in a stage where he has his own ideas about how things should be done and was quick to let "Mis Chel" (Michelle) know where he wanted to stand and sit! A smile was also hard to come by because the pictures for him were a chance to be a tiger licking his lips in the jungle! Yes, this is true! You cannot make this stuff up! Michelle has two boys of her own, so she understands - but she was a trooper. :) And we still managed to get some good pictures of our little tiger to frame and share with family...soon!

(I also plan to update the blog with some of these pictures, but right now blogger is telling me the blog is full. I can add pictures to new posts, but not at the top of the blog or the sidebar, etc. Do any of you more knowledgeable blogger friends know what I can do to fix that problem? Will I have to start a new blog or is there a trick I don't know about?)

Things that make me smile :)

James has been doing so many things lately that make me laugh until I cry. He's now officially closer to three than two and whether I want to admit it or not, he is hardly a baby anymore. He says now that he's my "big boy baby." I'll take it while it lasts. :) His little personality has just blossomed - I love who God has made him.

I just wanted to record a few cute stories of our life with him lately - before he's just my "big boy" and not my "big boy baby" anymore.

1. James and Daddy have been having "boy's night" once a week while I go to a women's Bible study. The first week that I attended, I came home to a story that really made laugh. Stephen told me that they went to Walmart and browsed the toy aisles. James came across an etch-a-sketch and said that he wanted one. Stephen told him that maybe Mama and Daddy could get him one for Christmas or that we could ask Santa for one. He thought about it for a minute and said matter-of-factly "No, I want Ma Collins to get me one." (Grandma Collins is my mother's mother, and his Great-grandma.) Since we don't live close to her or get to see family in South Carolina as often as we'd like, it really tickled me that she came to his mind. I called her later that week to tell her the story (I knew she would love that he mentioned her), and I told her that an etch-a-sketch would be a great idea to get him for Christmas. A few days later we  found a package at the door - she didn't wait until Christmas. He is definitely not lacking for anything - especially people that love him. :)

2. James loves animals, and so we visit Petsmart quite a bit and just look at the fish, birds, cats, etc with James. It's free entertainment, and he thinks that it's just the best thing to "go see the pets!" On our last visit he asked if he could bring this little grasshopper pull toy with us. We agreed but didn't think much about it. When we got inside and he was pulling it behind him in the store, I realized that he asked to bring it because he was trying to walk his "pet" on it's "leash" like he's seen all the other dog owners do in Petsmart on previous visits. At first I thought it was precious, and then my little softie heart could not take it. I found an employee and asked "What is the cheapest and easiest fish that we could purchase for our 2 year old son?" And now we are officially the proud owners of "Water", a female beta fish. :) And he absolutely adores his "pet."

3. He has so many little phrases and funny things that he says lately. He uses the word "yeppers" (he says that Daddy taught him that one) now. And his most beloved phrase that he uses when he is surprised by something is "Oh, chicken fingers!" That one continues to make us laugh. He says that he heard it on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse...probably true! :) He says things like, "I want to visit the Statue of Liberty soon" and I constantly ask myself where he comes up with these things. He also woke up at 4 a.m. on Sunday morning and would not go back to sleep, because as I was putting him to sleep the night before he was being very inquisitive and I told him that I would, per his request, find out about "what the white stuff was on the mice" in his animal video when he woke up in the morning. And so early the next morning, he was ready to hold me to my word (he is very literal!) I will never let questions about life's great mysteries ever go unanswered before bedtime again, believe me! It was not funny at 4 a.m., but honestly, it's one of the things that I love about him the most. I hope he never stops asking questions.

4. I love that he is forming his own opinion about many things including what he likes to wear. This outfit of choice made me laugh until I cried. I love that he marches to the beat of his own drum, and I hope he always will be proud of who he is and who God made him. :) I pray that he'll always be an imitator of Jesus and nobody else.

Apple Picking!

We are really enjoying our new town. We feel like we're perfectly located between the city and the country, and I love that we get to enjoy the best of both worlds! Saturday we took a 15-20 minute drive to a local apple orchard so James could pick apples for the first time (and Mama's first time too)! We had the best time picking apples and have big plans for all those apples this week...!

Granddaddy's Boat

Anyone in our family will tell you that my Dad is one of a kind. I really don't know anyone else like him. He doesn't fit into a mold, and he doesn't want or try to either. He is serious by nature, but can be so silly. He is an athlete and a former marine. He is passionate about many things including safety and self-defense, but there is nothing that compares with his passion for Jesus and telling others about Him. He is the picture of strength to me in so many ways. He also has a heart of compassion, and tears flow easily when he is touched deeply. And he isn't ashamed and doesn't try to hold them back either. He is a words of affirmation person, and he uses his words to encourage and bless others - even complete strangers. He doesn't ever miss an opportunity to encourage a coworker, a waitress at a restaurant, or a "young person." When he feels led by the Holy Spirit to speak and encourage someone, He does. It's one of the things that I love most about him. He loves nature and the outdoors. He has such an appreciation for the things that God has created, and I believe that he feels closest to God when he is outdoors, surrounded by the beauty of God's creation. Kayaking/canoeing is one of his favorite hobbies, and a few months ago when we visited I know he was so excited to be able to share that love with James for the first time. My stepmom sent me these pictures yesterday, and I am so glad to have his first time on "Granddaddy's boat," and the first time on any boat, captured on camera. James has a lot of great godly men in his life, and I'm so glad that his Granddaddy is one of them.

Cow Appreciation Day

We now have a two year tradition going for participating in Cow Appreciation Day. We definitely were very appreciative of all that free chicken that our family enjoyed. James absolutely loved participating and dressing up like a cow this year! He talked about it and looked forward to Daddy coming home from work the whole day. :)

The Fourth!

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1)

In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and He answered by setting me free. (Psalm 118:5)

I sought the LORD, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.
(Psalm 34:4)

If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:36)
