Day Out with Thomas (Three Years Running!)

One nice little perk of our town for our train-loving boys is the Heart of Dixie Railroad which has Thomas come to town each Spring. The first year we got train tickets, but now we just go for all of the extra activities. There is plenty to keep you busy for hours! I remember thinking many times last year as we walked around that we would have Jude with us the following year, and it came to my mind many times today while I watched the boys happily take it all in...together! I'm so thankful for opportunities to make special memories as a family!

Day out with Thomas this time last year...

They had iPad's with Thomas games in the train table area. :)

Jude squealed with delight to have the legos all to himself (without his brother interrupting his playing!)

Giant Maze

They had instruments to play while an older man sang folk-y music about wanting to be a choo-choo train. They loved it!

Putt-Putt with Daddy

A little picnic complete with Funnel Cake :) (Jude is wanting it but he's eating cheerios!.)

Bouncy Castle Fun

Story time with our librarian! James was so happy to see her!

Our Life Lately...

I hate that I cannot keep up with the blog as much lately. I documented James' first year so frequently and lately I am doing everything I can to stay on top of just the normal, day-to-day things. Jude is currently in an extremely active phase (plus he's a climber, an escape artist out of his high chair, etc.!) so I just never stop or sit still. We've also had a few little health changes/scares with James lately. I'll try to do a little bulleted update on the end of March and beginning of April before any more time passes.

1. Fit to Be DYED - I know some of y'all will probably think we've totally lost our marbles with this first little update, but at the beginning of March we started to make some connections about some behaviors James was struggling with that we found out were side-effects of a medicine that he was taking daily (Polyethylene Glycol) and that, ironically, it was also in many foods that he was eating (propylene glycol - "the kissing cousin" of the other), particularly artificial coloring in food. I won't go into great detail because I want to find an appropriate balance between respecting James' privacy, but I also want to document and share vaguely incase it could be a help to others. It is by the grace of God that we made the connection, and had I not been keeping a line-a-day journal for the last year or so I don't know that we would have put the pieces together. I have read so much the last few weeks on the topic of these ingredient and artificial colorings in food, and I could share a million articles and resources (but I won't do that!). But I will say that after much research, prayer, and after removing any foods with artificial coloring from his diet along with this medicine, James is feeling much happier. We are convinced that he has a sensitivity/allergy to these ingredients (common signs might be: hyperactivity, restlessness, sleep issues, digestive issues, dark circles under the eyes, etc.), and since we removed them from his diet we have seen significant improvement in all of these areas. We thought initially that he might rebel against the change but instead he is asking us for the foods that "make him feel good" (because he can tell the difference!).

What does this mean? We read the labels on the foods we buy and avoid any with colors listed (Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5, Blue 1, etc.) as well as sodium benzoate and propylene glycol. I'm sure there are lots of other questionable ingredients to be explored, but this is a starting point and a change that we find manageable . We aren't shopping at organic stores or spending a fortune, but we are being more informed about what we are eating in an effort to help James but we are recognizing that we are all feeling better. And there are tons of products out there (even at Walmart!). I've been compiling a list of these dye-free products and may post them for anyone interested at a later date.

Will James ever eat an M&M again? I'm sure there will be the occasional "cheats" along the way (and sometimes we will be eating out and probably consume things unknowingly), but we hope that our friends and families will support and encourage the change. We wont deprive him of "being a child" - but it just means that we'll be much more intentional, for example: make him homemade treats (I've made three kinds of homemade donuts the last few weeks!), instead of processed foods with added colors, or have alternative products on hand for church or other activities. I wouldn't give peanut butter to a child with a peanut allergy, and so I have to remember that this is no different (even if the results are more delayed) when I feel guilty about having to turn down the offer of a lollipop or whatever.

Please don't think we've gone totally nutty (I was skeptical too!), but it's amazing the difference! I would be happy to discuss this further with anyone in a similar boat but I'm sure that's more than enough info for now...

2. A Hard Knock - Less than a week after we made significant diet changes as a family, James took a bad fall while trying to get a pillow off the bed and knocked four baby teeth loose on the wooden bed frame. He's had lots of bumps and bruises the last four years, but I don't think anything scared me quite like this: the blood, the bruising and swelling, the condition of the teeth. I was not handling the situation well and could hardly even sleep the night of the injury (worried if he would be able to keep his teeth!). We had just been to the dentist for his cleaning that morning, so I was able to get in touch with his dentist first thing the next morning and get him in for an x-ray. There was nothing on the x-ray that was a cause for concern, and the dentist put him on a soft diet for a week (smoothies, applesauce, etc.) to see if the teeth would firm back up. It has been a little over two weeks, and we are so thankful that the teeth have, in fact, gradually firmed back up! We have prayed with James throughout the last few weeks, and we have thanked God for His healing. There is still a risk of infection (even weeks or months out) and they are beginning to darken some now which is normal for an injury like this, but we are continuing to pray that they would not become infected or have to be pulled (yes, they are baby teeth, but no one would wish for their child to have to go through the trauma of having multiple teeth pulled.) Thank you for praying for him.

3. Anniversary Celebration - Stephen and I celebrated our 7th anniversary a few days after James took his bad fall. We changed our anniversary plans about 87 times in the days that followed (concerned about us not being with him and him further injuring the teeth that were supposed to be "possibly firming.") But, in the end, we did end up going out and enjoying a nice dinner at Village Tavern while James and Jude took it easy at Nana and Grandpa's for a few hours. It was nice to eat and relax (without little people in tow) and then we enjoyed Steel City Pops afterwards (if you are even in Birmingham, it's a must-try!).

I love that we've been taking a picture like this every year on our anniversary for the last 7 years, and we can see how much our family has grown since the beginning!

Thankful for the last seven years with this man! Thankful for some time alone to enjoy each other!

4. Brotherly Love: I love everything about these two brothers. I love when they play together and how they love each other. I love that they have their own little language for communicating in screams...(most of the time!). I love dressing them alike every chance I get. And I absolutely love being their Mama. Here are a few of their sweet moments together:

Day Out with Thomas...

I'll do a whole post on Day Out with Thomas later today (hopefully!...) Too Many Pictures to Post Here :)

March Madness

The last few months have been the craziest with all our church activities, basketball, regular motherly/wifely/home-ish responsibilities, and trying to keep up with two kids (that are both very mobile now!). I have a list that will likely never get fully accomplished and it's hard to turn my brain off at night when I go to sleep. Fortunately, I'd rather snuggle babies, read books, and play soccer outside because I know that babies don't wait (they just keep growing!)...So, I try to find the balance and lots of tasks just don't always get done or done to the level of perfectionism I might have desired in the past (but that's a good thing too! These little people grow me in so many ways!)...

Just a few pictures from our version of March Madness (our crazy but wonderful life):

We had a big weekend at the end of February: James' last basketball game (Nana, Grandpa, Jonathan, and Samuel came.), Reagan's 1st Birthday Party, James Basketball Award's Night. (I still haven't downloaded the pictures from Nana's camera - so behind!)

James and Jude are playing together more and more. He adores his big brother:

We washed cars on a pretty weekend. It attracted several kids from the neighborhood kids. James kept telling them "we have a great family" while they helped us wash the cars. Ha! I pray he always feels that way!

So, this is not posed..the other day while we were getting ready for church, Jude was digging through the DVDs and I remembered that we had a picture of James doing the same thing in the same outfit. So, I had to get a picture. (I have a memory for the craziest things - I know!) This was not staged - promise!

Jude in 2014:

James in 2010:

Jude is 9 Months Old!

Jude has been with us on the outside as long as I carried him on the inside now. :) It just feels like he's always been a part of us now.

Wearing: 6-9 month clothing and some 12 month clothing; size 3 diapers; was just measured at 4.5 wide (for a high instep apparently; "his feet stretch up") for his first pair of shoes (that weren't hand-me-downs from James; wanted good shoes that fit him well as he begins to walk)

Growth: He has really tapered way off since his 6 month appointment. He weighed 20 pounds, 10 ounces and was 28 inches long (just below the 50th percentile for both) at his 9 month appointment. He does have some amazing cheeks (and his head circumference is a lot bigger as well) so I think it gives him a deceptively bigger look.

Sleeping: He takes 2 or 3 naps during the day with the longest one in the afternoon when James naps. He sleeps 10-12 hours at night. He may wake some but quickly resettles. I think teething pain is contributing to more restless sleep lately.

Eating: We are doing a combination of baby food and finger food at ever meal, and sometimes only finger foods. We recently when to chick-fil-a (we forgot baby food) and he ate small pieces of grilled chicken and fruit with no problem. He seems to love everything we offer him.

Personality: Content, happy, easy-going, active, fearless, playful, and sneaky (always up to something!)

Teething: He still just has two teeth on the bottom (since 6 months old), but his gums are so swollen. He may end up with a bunch all at once...I don't know.

Look: Big Brown Eyes, light brown hair that seems to be getting curly; he looks very similar to James but with darker features; lately so many people have thought he was a girl (I'm going to take that as a compliment for now and assume that he's just a beautiful baby.)

New "Tricks": super fast crawler, pulling up, getting into everything, can stand for a few seconds when he's still and not bouncing, says "Mama" and "Dada," can escape from his high chair which is not fun for me at all but worth documenting (he pulls his legs up and wiggles out of the buckle), is starting to cruise on furniture and let go and stand unassisted. I predict he will be walking before his birthday like his big brother.

Likes: playing, being on the go and into everything, eating, bath time, watching us brush our teeth, swinging and being outside, anything that James is doing is where he wants to be, he seems to like dog stuffed animals, playing with books and paper (and eating paper), he loves remotes and cell phones, he loves taking out DVD cases, he laughs at the word "no" and "bless you" and "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" with Mama; the only things that he dislikes are being stopped from all of his adventures and being left in the church nursery

Jude Brooks, we are so grateful that you are ours and we are yours! We praise God for your sweet life (with every shred of paper that we pull from your mouth, every page in a book that you crumple, and every DVD case that you scatter - you are SO loved!)

Love, Mama

4 year old & (Almost) 9 Month Pictures

I like to update a few picture frames in our house and add new pictures to the boys' scrapbooks every 6 months or so, especially trying to get a good picture around their birthdays. Stephen and I tried our hand at taking some at the park recently, and I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. I'm no professional so there are some shadows in a few pictures and things like that, but I really enjoy taking pictures of my two favorite subjects.

James is really not into taking posed pictures right now and smiling in a way that shows his teeth for some reason, but I thought these were still very sweet pictures of our big four year old.
He has brought me so much joy these last four years! Oh how my heart is just full of love for him!

I adore this sweet baby boy!

My two most precious little blessings.

I love these candid shots. :)

(Almost) 9 Months with this little stinker! He's a charmer!

We'll have to bring a tripod (or a stack of books!) to get a shot of the whole family next time. :)
